AfonTherapist_Sophie

Hello

I'm Sophie. I have an MSc in Counselling & I'm a registered member with the BACP (British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy).

I believe, at my core, that things become more manageable once they are said aloud.
That doesn’t mean it’s easy — and it doesn’t mean words always come straight away.

My approach to therapy is about sitting with you, wherever you are in your journey. Sometimes you will lead, and I will follow. Other times, I may take a more gentle, direct role — helping to create the safety, confidence, and space needed to explore what feels hard to say, or what hasn’t yet found words.

I don’t claim to have all the answers, or to be able to “fix” everything. What I can offer is a space where you feel listened to, respected, and valued. Therapy looks different for everyone, and my way of working reflects that. My approach is responsive and flexible, sometimes changing from session to session, depending on what you need in that moment.

How I Work

I work in a flexible, trauma-informed way, shaped around the individual rather than a fixed method. My approach is relational, creative, and responsive — offering support that meets people where they are.

Working with Children & Young People

My work with children and young people has always been fluid and responsive, shaped around the individual rather than a fixed approach. I use a wide range of activities, creative methods, and “out of the box” thinking to indirectly support young people, helping them feel safe enough to engage at their own pace.

Alongside this, I place strong value on the direct therapeutic relationship. Sessions may involve games, creative materials, or shared activities, while maintaining a clear therapeutic focus — offering emotional containment, consistency, and support to develop understanding, regulation, and expression.

Working with Parents, Carers, and Professionals

My work extends beyond the therapy room. I have extensive experience supporting parents, carers, and professionals, recognising that children and young people exist within wider systems.

This has included offering reflective spaces to pause and make sense of challenges, as well as creating bespoke, practical action plans to help adults feel more confident in how they can move forward and support the young people in their care.

Working with Adults

I also offer counselling and therapeutic support to adults, including parents and carers in their own right. This may involve exploring personal experiences, current pressures, or the impact of supporting a child or young person with additional or complex needs.

I recognise the importance of having a space that is solely for you, separate from your caring role.

Across all my work, I aim to offer thoughtful, relational, and trauma-informed support — meeting people where they are, while gently helping them move towards greater understanding, confidence, and emotional safety.

Towards Calmer Waters.
